This drink belongs to a family of drinks named for the technique used in making the members of this families drinks. This drink more specfically belongs to the amaretto era, named for drinks that contain amaretto as a primary agent. This drink has always called for amaretto baileys and cognac. The brand of amaretto and cognac used in this drink changes with literature and age. This drink appears in literature as early as:

Standard directory of advertising agencies: Issue 195 in 1982

Blair & Ketchum's country journal: Volume 9 in 1982

This drink has no specific location associated with it, however it does appear definitively in literature in 1982 which is a strong indicator this drink was created by a spirits company. There is no spirits company claiming this cocktail as thier own, nor is anyone else for that matter.

This drink reached it's peak popularity in the late 1980's and early 1990's and is still ordered today as seen in these popular cocktail books:

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Bartending by Amy Zavatto in 2005

"ABC ___ 1 oz. amaretto 1 oz. Bailey's Irish cream 1 oz. cognac In 2 shot glasses, gently layer 1⁄2 ounce amaretto, 1⁄2 ounce Bailey's Irish cream, and 1⁄2 ounce cognac." Night+Day Mexico City - Page 76 by Pedro Romero in 2007

"The sleek wall-length bar serves national and international cocktails—among the latter, the “ABC” with amaretto, Bailey's, and cognac is a mix of intoxicating sweets. Delectable sushi and other hors d'oeuvres are served by Suntory"

There is no literature suggesting that amaretto di saronno was used in this drink, nor any particular type of cognac. However, bailey's has always been used in this drink. Bailey's does not claim this drink for themselves in literature.

This drink dates to 1982 and contained at least as of then:

Layer these ingredients in this order in a shot glass:

Amaretto (Undetermined)

Bailey's

Cognac
