This drink directly preceeds the Amaretto Freeze and it appears in print as early as:
Decanter: Volume 3 in 1977
"We could have had Amaretto Mist, pure liqueur served in an old- fashioned glass over crushed ice with a twist of lemon."
House & garden: Volume 149 in 1977
"Amaretto Mist - orange juice over crushed ice and a float of Amaretto"
This drink may have derived from the popular scotch mist, although there is a large date gap between the two drinks and it is undetermined. Nevertheless, this drink appears nationwide within 2 years of one of the earliest printings, so therefore, we can conclude this drink was likely created by Amaretto Di Saronno themselves.
This float technique also appears often in early publications surrounding this drink, but the technique faded before the Amaretto Freeze was likely created. It is hard to say why this drink was created, it has no apparent connection to other early amaretto drinks. This only goes to support the theory that it was created by Di Saronno.
This drink dates between 1970 - 1976 and contained at least as of then:
Pour orange juice over crushed ice in a rocks glass
Layer Amaretto Di Saronno on top
Garnish with lemon twist
