This drink is named after the profession of working steel. The drink appears in literature as early as:

Cocktails and mixed drinks handbook by Edward Tirado in 1976

"17 Boilermaker"

There was also a Purdue Football team during this time:

Boilermakers: a history of Purdue football by Bob Collins in 1976

"Leroy scored 222 points for his career and crossed the goal 37 times; both still are Boilermaker records. His average of 6.61 per carry (1967) for a season and 5.97 for his career still top the books. On top of that, he caught 80 passes."

The boilermakers (profession) was essential to the Navy during the Vietnam War and is very likely were this drink gets it's name. There is no specific location associated with this drink and it's contents have remained the same since it's creation.
